Powerful Storm Wednesday Night

A strong monsoon storm dumped rain on the Catalina Foothills and Midtown Wednesday night. The photo at left is from Rebecca Herbig.  This storm knocked down powerlines with high winds and exploded transformers with lightning strikes.  The big winner for rainfall was the Rillito River at Dodge Blvd, near the Jewish Community Center, with 2.13" of rain.  But perhaps the biggest legacy from this storm was the power outages.  Over 35,000 people had power knocked out, including countless businesses.  With the powerlines snapped and transformers knocked out of commission it took quite some time to get the power back on in areas.  If you have photos of this storm or the aftermath, send them to See It, Snap It, Send It.  You may see your photo online or on the air. - First Alert Meteorologist Erin Jordan

Almost looks too good to be a true photo doesn't it?  This photo was taken on Wednesday evening in Pearce by Ed Erbeck Jr.  We will see many more storms like this one through the weekend.  The remnants of Dolly will pick up our monsoon action through Monday.  Heavy downpours will lead to washes running and even localized flooding in some areas.

Monsoon Information

As Chief Chuck mentioned today; here are the links to the National Weather Service's "Tracking the Monsoon" page. This page also has links to monsoon statistics, dewpoint data, monsoon rainfall, What is the monsoon?, and tracking the monsoon.

It's an active Monsoon Day here in southern Arizona. There is an upper level low moving through and that will wring out some of our tropical moisture.  To learn more about how upper level lows increase our monsoon storms click here.

This photo is of monsoon damage over the weekend at I-10 and the Patagonia/Wentworth exit.  This tree was struck by lightning and peeled apart. Charlene and Tom Crandell sent in this shot of damage in their yard.

Another Active Monsoon Weekend

It's not likely that we will see more photos like this over the weekend.  This is a funnel cloud in Nogales, Sonora. This photo was taken by Darwin Jackson last Saturday afternoon.

Above Normal Rainfall

So far this season we have seen quite a bit of rain!  Storms over the weekend and Monday have put some places around the area into above normal rainfall amounts.  The following is a list of cities, their rainfall amounts, and the normal amount for this time of year.  Nogales has seen the most rain and is over 3 inches above normal!!!

Record Rain!

Yesterday record rainfall fell at the Tucson International Airport.  The airport reported 1.73 inches of rain.  This shatters the old record of 0.90 inches set back in 1919!  The rain from yesterday pushed us above normal for rain since January 1^st.  The airport has seen 4.20 inches of rain so far this year.  This total is 0.14 inches above the normal value of 4.06 inches.  The picture was taken of a cell near Highway 181 by Ed Erbeck of a storm this week.
